Somebody local to sort out your tech at home

Most homes have at least one of these. The Wi-Fi that drops out every evening. The NAS somebody bought, plugged in and never finished setting up. The PC that went slow in the spring and never got its speed back, because nobody fancies losing a Sunday to reinstalling Windows.

I do this kind of work for a living, mostly on servers and company networks, and it carries straight over. A home network is the same problem with fewer cables. I'll come to you in London, or sort it remotely if that's quicker. Either way you hear what I'm going to do before I do it.

I won't fix everything. If the fault turns out to be on your internet provider's side, I'll tell you so, and what to ask them for.

What you get

  • Wi-Fi and router problems: drop-outs, rooms with no signal, a mesh kit that never quite worked
  • Slow or misbehaving Windows PCs, fixed without a reinstall where one is not needed
  • NAS boxes and home servers, set up properly and finished off
  • Backups of your photos and documents, tested by restoring something rather than trusted
  • A straight answer on whether something is worth repairing or is due a replacement

Who it's for

Households in London with a Wi-Fi or PC problem that's been put off for months, and nobody in the family who wants to be the one to sort it.

How it's priced

No price list. Describe the problem and I'll tell you what I'd do and what it will cost, before I start. Visits in London, remote help for anyone else in the UK.

Questions people ask

Will you come to my home?
Yes, in London. Outside London I can usually help remotely. I can't promise same-day, because I'm one person with a day job, so send a message or ring and I'll tell you when I can come.
What will it cost?
There's no price list. A slow PC and a house with no signal upstairs are different jobs, so tell me what's wrong and I'll tell you what I'd do and what it will cost, before I start anything. If it turns out bigger than I thought, I stop and ask before going on.
What if you can't fix it?
Then I'll say so, and tell you what your options are. Sometimes that's a new router. Sometimes the fault is your provider's and you need to ring them. If it looks like a hardware fault I'll say so early rather than keep poking at it.
What happens to my files and passwords?
I only look at what the job needs, and I tell you what that is before I start. Need a password? I'll ask for it, and you change it once I've finished. Stay in the room, or on the call, the whole time if you like.

Tell me what's wrong

Describe the problem, even roughly: what it does, when it started, what you've already tried. I reply within a working day, and I tell you what I'd do and what it will cost before I start anything.
